Eurycoma Longifolia, also known as ‘Tongkat Ali’ is an herbal medicinal plant of South-East Asian origin. Eurycoma Longifolia is a tall, slender shrub-tree that could only be found in rainforest throughout Malaysia & Southeast Asia.

Eurycoma Longifolia can grow up to about 12 meters in height with spirally arranged, pinnate leaves 20-40 cm (8-16 inches) long with 13041 leaflets. The flowers are dioecious, with male and female flowers on different trees; they are produced in large panicles, each flower with 5–6 very small petals. The fruit is green ripening dark red, 1–2 cm long and 0.5–1 cm broad. Unlike most of trees and herbs which have a horizontal root system, the root of an Eurycoma Longifolia grows as much as one meter straight into the ground. The root of Eurycoma Longifolia takes at least five years to mature . Sometimes for an older tree (15-20 years), the root itself can grow to a size that is taller than many people. This tough fibrous root penetrates deep into the earth to obtain its nutrients. Eurycoma Longifolia parts are rich in various bioactive compounds and those active ingredients of Eurycoma Longifolia are found primarily in the root. Those active ingredients for instance : eurycomaoside, eurycomalactone, eurycomanone, eurycolactone and pasakbumin-B.

Natives consider every part of the tree as medicine. The root and bark of Eurycoma Longifolia are used for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) and increasing interest in sex. Eurycoma Longifolia is also widely believed that it can be used to cure fever, malaria, ulcers, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, bone pain, cough, diarrhea, headache, syphilis, and cancer. Nowadays while Viagra could be fatal to some heart patients, Eurycoma Longifolia or ‘Tongkat Ali’ is said to be good for them and those suffering from high blood pressure. Eurycoma Longifolia roots which found only in the wild tropical forest of Southeast Asia, had to be brewed for long hours to get a bitter extract. In Southeast  Asian countries, people claim that tea made from this plant improves their sexual abilities and virility. Therefore, Eurycoma Longifolia is in such high demand that is now considered a “protected” species in most of those Southeast Asian countries.

Eurycoma Longifolia has been proven scientifically to have aphrodisiac properties and will enhance male sexual libido besides other medicinal values such as treatment for dysentery, glandular swelling, fever, malaria and other ailments. For instance, Eurycoma Longifolia raises your body’s levels of free testosterone naturally. In the old days, the plant parts have been traditionally used as a tonic for its anti-diabetic, aphrodisiac, antimicrobial, anti-pyretic and anti-malarial activities.

On the other hand, Eurycoma Longifolia also increases energy production in the body by increasing Adenosine Triphospate (ATP), an energy rich chemical that is responsible for nearly all the energy production in the body. At times of endurance exercise we can use up our ATP faster than we can replace it and we become fatigued.  Taking Eurycoma Longifolia (Tongkat Ali) carries a warning of insomnia and restlessness if the dose is too high.

In conclusion, Eurycoma Longifolio if taken at a right dosage, can greatly improve your general well being and your quality of life.
